The additives need to reach the metal surfaces to work properly. This is a problem for soap-based greases, because soaps have a higher polarity than additives. Functional soaps, where the additives are bundled together with the soap, improve the situation but don’t solve the problem entirely.

Epoch is based on non-polar polypropylene. This makes it easy for the additives to win the race to reach some metal to react with. Which, in turn, contributes to better lubricating performance, or less need for additives, or both.
